Board Books
Each page spread features people, animals, or things beforehand and what the aftermath was after something happened to them. Each object or person is labeled in the before and then again in the after. The after being: after the storm, after the elephant, after the baby, after some magic, and more. Just a quick and delightful, silly read to share together!
Picture Books
While Daddy is distracted, busy chasing the family’s mud loving dog, the curious daughter finds her latest fascination, pinecones! Can you have too many pinecones? The child definitely thinks not, what will happen when her collection spills out into other spaces. If you love this one, but sure to check out Off-Limits, with this fun duo!
Part seek-and-find, part silly with bright, bold illustrations, this book will surely delight readers! When Doris, the little elephant, doesn't want to be looked at, she moves to try to be camouflaged among new scenery. However, when Doris blends a little too well into the background, her idea of not wanting to be found changes a bit. The ending especially cracks us up!
As Sally preps with Mom for her playdate with Nico, Mom suggests putting what she doesn’t want Nico to play with into the wardrobe. Well, as it turns out, Sally isn’t willing to share anything with Nico and the wardrobe expands to accommodate all of Sally’s objects and more. Readers will laugh about the ridiculousness of all the things being stuffed into the wardrobe.
Bear’s Lost Glasses
by Leo Timmers
Everyone is surprised when an octopus comes to rest on top of a family's house. When the octopus appears to be there to stay on the roof, it plays games with friends visiting, becomes a slide, helps with laundry and house projects, and even helps rescue the neighbor's cat. By the end of the story, the octopus is a beloved housemate and community member. One day, the family wakes up to find the octopus gone. Will it come back, and if so, what will it bring with it? Such a delightful read-aloud!
It's vacation time, and everyone is ready to go swimming, or at least that's the response Dad gets. Dad and the kids wave goodbye to Mom, Papo, and Bella and race down precisely 168 steps to the pool. But after that first splash in, Marc exclaims he has to poop! Quickly they grab all their gear and race back up all 168 steps, only to have Marc realize he doesn't have to go anymore. What happens when Marc exclaims he has to poop after the third time back in the pool? You'll have to read it to find out!
Today on ant hill, it’s Andy’s birthday! He decides to throw a party to celebrate at his home with dancing and dips, inviting just his neighbors because his home is small. Well, what you may not know about ants is that they love a good party. Andy’s party grows to be a bit bigger than he ever imagined after news spreads. So fun!
Nothing can make readers start to laugh faster than a case of words and picture not lining up, as is the case in this fun read. A young girl who always wanted a dog, finally stumbles across one at the park, well at least it appears to one to her. Readers will laugh as the girl treats a bear like an oversized dog and the antics of such a mix up.
Mr. Watson loves to count his chickens, all three of them, with Mr. Nelson every morning. Soon, eggs are hatching, and new chickens are everywhere in the bathtub, playing piano, flying kites from the roof, in almost every nook and cranny. The noise, the mess, is just too much for Mr. Nelson. There were 456 chickens, too many! Will Mr. Watson figure out a solution for the chickens? What happens when the chickens escape? The outrageous storyline, singing chickens, and just plain ridiculousness make this story sharing that will be filled with giggles!
These two opposites are in a pickle as next-door neighbors who just can't seem to get along. The two pickles attempt to best one another by building a skateboarding ramp and a pool, but will excluding the other neighbor bring them happiness? Or maybe they can agree on a dilly of an idea for once? Full of all the punny humor, this read is dill-errific!
The shape-turned-cat really wants the book to draw a horse, but it insists that a horse is too hard to draw, so it draws other things, like friends. There are all sorts of mishaps, like a dog that wants to chase and an angry bear. Will the book eventually give in and attempt to draw a horse? Kids will laugh along with this funny read and perhaps be inspired to create something they previously thought they couldn't.
Learning to draw and humor? Love the combo in this, as readers can both attempt to draw along with the book and roll with laughter from things having the opposite effect on the chicken. From attempting to fight a dragon to blasting into outer space in a rocket, the unexpected happens and hilarity follows.
Funny, with unexpected twists, and is sure to be laugh for adults and kids. Pokko's parents make the biggest mistake by giving her a drum. Pokko plays the drum all the time. My favorite part is the dad that keeps telling the mom what a mistake it was to get her the drum, the mom can't hear him because of the loud drum and just says basically okay to everything. Anyways, Pokko's father sends her out of the house to play her drum. While playing in the woods, random animals follow her playing instruments and enjoying the music. My son's favorite part is where Pokko scolds the wolf for eating a band member.
Mina, the mouse, didn’t worry much, until the day her father came home and told her to come outside for a big surprise, a new pet squirrel! Or so her dad believes, Mina however, doesn’t believe it’s a squirrel and readers will most likely side with Mina on this. Definitely one that will have you turning the pages to see what happens!
Anytime text or illustrations are extreme, my 8 yo is in, and the cover on this one drew him in immediately; bonus for oversized formatting and expanding page spreads! Two brothers go in search of dinosaurs. The older brother leads the way, ready to brave the adventure, telling his brother all about what it will be like to find a dinosaur. The younger one starts feeling uneasy and notices strange dinosaur-like things, wanting to escape the adventure. Throughout the book, readers can spot the appearance of dinosaurs and wonder what will happen to the brothers. It's such a fun read, and the darker and spookier illustrations will surely pull in readers who delight in being scared a bit.
If your reader loves stories like Creepy Carrot, be sure to check out this silly read about what could happen when you feed the ducks at Cucumonga Campground. Hector read the signs, heard the warnings, but he just couldn’t resist breaking the rule to not feed the ducks! An unexpected and hilarious tale!
Another silly text not aligning with illustrations story! These are so fun to share with kids! When a boy’s goldfish is attacked, Ramon Fellini, the cat-I mean dog detective is quick on the scene. Ramon Fellini, may not end up being the detective the boy thought, but will the boy figure it out in time?
A twist on the classic fairy tale, silly Pea will delight and remind readers of The Little Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. Pea devours one thing after the next after eating a brussels sprout. After an incredible Pea consuming feast, what will happen between the Princess and the Pea when nighttime comes? Readers will laugh about the absurdity of the Pea's actions!
Oh, how we love a good text and illustration misalignment here, where the text is telling one story and the illustrations are offering another! Dr. Rose, a marine biologist, is off to the depths of the oceans trying to find if there's any truth to the fisherfolk's tale of the enormous creature they call Carmella. Will she find Carmella, or will Carmella find her?
If you have a reader who loves all books exaggerated and over-the-top ridiculous, you must check this book out! Frank the monster absolutely loves Celeste's chicken nuggets, but when Frank's devouring of chicken nuggets gets a little too extreme, Celeste hatches up a plan to derail Frank's chicken nugget-loving craze. Teachers, this one would make an excellent addition to a math lesson about number doubling!
Nonfiction!
(Can nonfiction reads result in laughs? Surprisingly yes! A super challenging connection to pull off, these funny nonfiction reads appeal to such a variety of readers. Fantastic and definitely worth checking out!)
Don’t Trust Fish
by Neil Sharpson, illustrated by Dan Santat
The Invention Hunters are a group of four scientists who travel around in their Museum of Inventionology searching and collecting the world's greatest inventions! They tend to crash land and leave a disaster in their wake which apparently only the one child character in each book is aware of their presence. As soon as they spot an invention, all four scientists try to guess what it could possibly be. They have super silly guesses that kids will be all in giggles about! Eventually the child character tells them what the invention is and how it works. (So far there are four books in this series, so check out more if you enjoy!)
Early Reader & Chapter Books
Silly characters and situations in this chapter book series, will have readers wanting to read more! Gumluck is a friendly wizard and does his best to help out his fellow townsfolk with their problems, although he usually ends up messing up their problems instead of solving them. Gumluck although unpopular with the townsfolk, ends up making friends with a wise raven, Helvetica who tells this story, and a ghost named Butterscotch who haunts Gumluck's hair. More than anything Gumluck wants to be crowned Harvest Hero, even though his chances are slim to none. Will Gumluck become Harvest Hero with the help of his new friends?
Graphic Novels
Crazy cat antics and stories, yes please! You can spy the Pusheen craze everywhere lately, even in books! This series is so silly and perfect for cat story fans of all ages. The text is shorter, but the words used are more complex, so I would put this as most similar to a graphic novel for chapter book to middle grade readers. This is the first in a series!
Molly wants a dog in the worst way; instead, she ends up with Bear. Bear turns out to be the best pet friend she's always dreamed of, if only she could keep hiding him from her parents. What happens when Molly's parents find out she's been hiding Bear? What happens when it's time to go back to school? What will Molly's friends think of Bear? Sweet and simple, kids will be delighted with this joyful read's antics and silliness, plus the bonus short stories at the end!
Middle Grade Novels
Surviving their new school just became a bit tricker now that Principal Wombat has made the three new students hall monitors, no connection to them being monitor lizards, of course! The friends must figure out how to survive at school, stand up for themselves, and protect their school from a scheming bird!
